Citizen schools was established to educate youth and strengthen communities. We accomplish this mission through several programs. One is an integrated academic curriculum that involves constant communication with teachers and parents, homework assistance, and content area tutorials as well as our School Navigation curriculum that teaches skills such as note taking, organization, expository reading, etc. Another is apprenticeships in which accomplished members of the community volunteer to teach their passions or professions to youth. The volunteer Citizen Teachers receive training and support throughout the apprenticeship. The last component develops leadership through guided and/or closely supervised activities, opening and closing circles, and explorations to various places in the greater Albuquerque area.
The National Teaching Fellowship
The Citizen Schools National Teaching Fellowship is a service program offering a two-year, leadership development experience, including service as a team leader at a Citizen Schools campus, professional development with a partner organization in the community, and the opportunity for optional enrollment in a pioneering Master's program in out-of-school learning.
The Fellowship is designed to provide hands-on leadership development to people of varied backgrounds who have high potential as educators and community builders.
National Teaching Fellows are at the forefront of a new movement to improve American education through out-of-school learning. Designed for recent college graduates and mid-career professionals seeking to transform the out-of-school time education field into a true partner with national education reform initiatives, the Fellowship is paid, with full health benefits, and offers the opportunity to work in a highly collegial and entrepreneurial environment at a nationally recognized leader in the out-of-school time field.
The experience is intensive. Fellows work full-time, typically 50 hours a week including some evenings and weekends. They participate in professional development opportunities and attend summer and school-vacation Institutes to prepare for their work with students. Fellows find, that after two years, they have the formal education, institutional credibility, and first-hand experience to launch a career in educational leadership.
