FYI AmeriCorp Enterprise City PDF Print E-mail

Enterprise City is a 7-week camp for children ages 7 years to 14 years old. The program is a great incite to the future for the children to learn about money management and the world of work by operating and working in their own little mock city. The city consists of a bank, a judicial system, a media center, a retail store, a restaurant, and a theatre. Each child receives a paycheck once a week for their labor, which is used to pay “bills”, “taxes”, and to buy items at the local Enterprise City businesses. They are also responsible for balancing checkbooks and maintaining a positive bank account. The participants’ goal is to save money and at the end of the program they have the opportunity to buy/bid on items such as bikes, iPods, skateboards, etc.

Dr. Jill Biden Issues Challenge to All Americans to Support Our Troops PDF Print E-mail

Dr. Jill Biden, wife of United States Vice President Joe Biden, issued a challenge to all Americans to support our servicemen and women, and military families by visiting Serve.gov to find ways to serve those who honorably serve our nation. In a video that aired during Lifetime’s Army Wives series, Dr. Biden stated that “we all have a responsibility to do our part” to support and engage our active and retired troops – and encouraged viewers to get involved and share their story.

Visit Serve.gov and tell us what you’re doing to support our brave men and women in uniform. The Corporation is working to expand volunteer opportunities for Americans to serve veterans, military service members and their families and to use these individuals’ skills to help solve our nation’s toughest challenges.

United We Serve - Summer of Service activity “Let’s Read, Let’s Move” PDF Print E-mail

The New Mexico VISTA Sponsor Southwest Youth Services conducted a United We Serve - Summer of Service activity “Let’s Read, Let’s Move” as part of the 2010 Indigenous Soccer Cup and Native Youth Leadership Conference July 20-23, 2010. This annual event brings together Native youth soccer players from Tribes across New Mexico and Indian Country, and is a celebration of Native culture, wellness, youth leadership and sport. The Soccer Cup event exemplified the “Let’s Move” component with student participants physically active in daily pre- and tournament soccer competition. In partnership with Southwest Youth Services, the New Mexico Commission for Community Volunteerism, the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department and the State Corporation Office joined together to support both events by participating in a two-days of one hour workshops building on the “Let’s Read” initiative. Native Youth Leadership Conference participants were asked to bring a book donation to the workshops, learned about the CNCS national and local service programs and then were asked to come together in teams, describing community needs and how they might plan and develop a project to meet those needs in their communities. Southwest Youth Services 12 VISTA members and 7 Summer Associates took leadership roles in teamwork activities as well as actively participating in all aspects of the event which registered 150 youth participants plus coaches, family members and other interested individuals with over 225 books collected. Donated books will be distributed to area Tribal community libraries.
