Welcome to New Mexico Commission for Community Volunteerism

The indigenous communities of North America and New Mexico have even longer traditions of community-centered social structures and inter-generational responsibility. Democratic participation and civic engagement provide the foundation and framework for our nation’s political values. A more active and engaged citizenry remains both a goal and a source of pride for our country and our state.

HandsOn University Online Learning Center - “Impact. Education. Power”

HandsOn Network is redefining the learning process for volunteer training. As educators and employers increasingly recognize civic engagement as a desirable trait, we are evolving our tools and resources to meet the increased demand in formalized training. Powered by University of Phoenix, the leader in online learning, HandsOn Network has launched the HandsOn University Online Learning Center, an interactive e-Learning site, to transform the capacity of people to take action that changes the world.

Our premier e-Learning course, Skills-based Volunteering (SBV), is an interactive, online training course exposing participants to the principles of skills-based and pro-bono volunteering. The course begins by teaching participants about skills-based volunteering and its benefits and challenges. Participants can then choose which area of specific volunteering to focus their studies on: individual, business, or nonprofit. The course then concludes with implementation and management of a SBV program. This course provides participants with real examples, tips, and easy-to-follow steps for getting involved in the community, as well as for getting volunteers involved in an organization.

UNM Volunteer Management Certificate Program

It was a nonprofit created over ten years ago to facilitate volunteering at local nonprofits in the Albuquerque area. It recently donated $14,000 to the UNM Foundation to benefit the nonprofit community and its hard working volunteer managers. Over the past 18 months, Volunteer Albuquerque, with support from the Center for Nonprofit Excellence, M.O.V.E, NM Commission on Volunteerism and the CVC have been working with UNM’s Continuing Education, to establish a Volunteer Management Certificate Program as its legacy to the community. The donation will fund scholarships for this certificate program, which consists of courses specifically designed for volunteer managers in the areas of motivating and managing volunteers, communicating and creating positive change in nonprofits.

Volunteer Albuquerque (VA), was the predecessor to the City of Albuquerque’s M.O.V.E Office, established in 2005 to continue VA’s works of matching volunteers with nonprofits that needed them. For four years, VA worked with M.O.V.E. to produce seminars and the brown bag series for volunteer managers until 2009, at which time it decided to cease active operations.
